Cairo: The life of Egypt

To get a feel of Egypt and its people you have to roam around its capital city itself - Cairo. Cairo represents both the past and present of Egypt very well. Tahrir square, which witnessed some of Egypt’s iconic protests and demonstrations is the first place you should go to. Tahrir square will tell the story of how it has shaped modern Egypt by incidents like the Egyptian Bread Riots of 1977. The Egyptian Museum is another attraction of Cairo. It has various important collections like the treasures of Tutankhamun.

Enough about the history and politics. Let’s dive right into the bazaars and markets where every city’s life resides. The Khan El Khalili Bazaar will amaze you with its beautiful colors, flagrant spices and intricate crafts. Stroll through the streets of Cairo and give yourself a treat from the live street food like koshari and falafel. As the sun sets don’t hurry to the hotels yet, the nightlife that Cairo has to offer will take your breath away. Cairo will make you dance through the nights in its ambient cafes and modern rooftop bars.

Giza: Pyramids and Sphinx

After experiencing Cairo to the fullest we have to explore the greatest attraction of Egypt - The pyramids and sphinx. Giza, a rocky plateau situated just six kilometers away from Cairo, is part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The three pyramids were named after the kings they were built for - Khufu, Khafre, and Menkaure. Of the three, the great pyramid of Khufu is the largest and majestic. It is the only surviving structure among the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World and it remained the tallest structure ever built for thousands of years until the completion of construction of the Lincoln Cathedral in 1311.

The great sphinx of Giza is another attraction here. It is a limestone statue of a mythical creature with the head of a human and the body of a lion. The face of the sphinx is thought to represent pharaoh Khafre. Take a camel ride around the pyramids in sphinx to marvel at the tales of kings of Nubia, once deemed as Gods by the people. To marvel at these ancient structures against the setting sun is an experience of a lifetime you would not want to miss. If you have time, visit the Solar Boat Museum where the solar barge of Khufu is reconstructed. The solar barge is among the goods that were buried in the Great Pyramid of Khufu supposed to be used in the afterlife. It is a symbol of the ancient beliefs in the time of pharoahs as well as a testament for the incredible craftsmanship of the people at that time.
